“There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in” says Leonard Cohen in his song “Anthem”. Both Suzanne Leal (The Deceptions) and Gail Holmes (In the Margins) write about very dark subjects. How do they find hope within this dark material and create light within their writing? Is the creation of chinks of light one of the roles of writers? And how does hope sustain us as writers and readers?
